Ep. 2 - The Mindset Shift You Need Before Hiring Your First Employee

Here's something most spa owners don't want to hear: you're not struggling with hiring because you can't find the right person. You're struggling because you don't trust yourself enough to let go and lead.

If that stings a little, don't worry. I've been there too.

Because here's the truth: hiring isn't just about finding the right person. It's about stepping into leadership. And that requires a totally different mindset than being solo.

Why Mindset Matters

If you don't shift your mindset before you start hiring, you'll end up micromanaging your team, burning yourself out, and resenting your business.

When I was going through this phase, I was blaming everything else, my location, my team not doing things exactly as I wanted. But it wasn't because of those things. It was because I didn't trust them and was still trying to do everything myself. Instead of making my life easier, my team just felt like more work.

The 3 Biggest Fears That Stop Spa Owners From Hiring

1. Fear of Losing Control

You're convinced no one will care as much as you do or do things exactly the way you would.

The truth? Letting go is necessary for growth. You cannot scale while doing everything yourself.

Instead of trying to control everything, focus on controlling your systems and SOPs. Start small—delegate just one low-risk task this week and see what happens.

The right hire will actually give you MORE control over your business, not less.

2. Fear of Making a Bad Hire

Maybe you've hired before and got burned. I have a dear friend who refused to talk about hiring for years after a bad experience. Now she's thriving with a team.

Look at what went wrong. Was it your hiring process, onboarding, or lack of clear expectations? Use trial periods like a 90-day probationary period.

Every successful business owner has made hiring mistakes. The key is to learn from them and create a better system.

3. Fear of the Financial Risk

Here's the truth: Hiring is not an expense. It's an investment. The right person will bring in more revenue than they cost.

If you're constantly turning away clients or booked out for weeks, you're losing way more money by NOT hiring.

Start part-time. There are incredible people who want part-time work. And make sure you're pricing correctly so your business can sustain growth.

Shifting From Solo to Leadership

Time is your most valuable asset. If you're spending time on things that don't require your expertise, you're costing yourself money.

Stop thinking, "I can just do it myself."

Start thinking, "Who can do this for me so I can focus on what only I can do?"

Signs You're Avoiding Hiring

If any of these sound familiar, it's time to seriously consider hiring:

  • You're exhausted but keep pushing through

  • You tell yourself, "No one can do it as well as I do"

  • You feel guilty about delegating

  • You're so burnt out you hardly have time for yourself or your family

If you're constantly overwhelmed, overworked, or overbooked, hiring isn't something you should do. It's something you NEED to do.

Your Next Step

This week, track your time. Where are you spending hours on things you could delegate? What's keeping you stuck?
