Ep. 43 - How To Have A Boring Spa Business
I know. "Boring" doesn't exactly sound like something to aspire to. But hear me out, because this might be the most important thing I share with you.
If you've been around me for a while, you've heard me say "bougie and boring." It's kind of become my thing. People laugh when they hear it, or they nod like they totally get it. But today I want to slow down and actually explain what it means, because it's not just a cute catchphrase. It's genuinely how I run my business and honestly, how I protect my peace.
We Are Addicted to Shiny Objects
As entrepreneurs, we are wired for opportunity. It's part of what makes us great. We're not afraid to take risks, try new things, dream big. And in the spa industry especially, there is always something new. A new modality, a new machine, a new certification, a new platform, a new way to market. There is always something promising to be "the thing" that finally propels you forward.
But here's what I see over and over again with spa owners... they keep chasing the new thing while the thing that's actually working is sitting right there in front of them, completely ignored. Not because it stopped working. But because it's reliable now, and reliable doesn't feel exciting.
That's where boring comes in.
Boring Doesn't Mean Small
Boring means predictable. It means intentional. It means you've found what works and you're going deeper with it instead of constantly starting over.
Every new thing you chase comes at a cost. Your time, your money, your mental energy. Your team has to learn it too. There's a learning curve. And the hard truth is... you don't even know if it's going to work. But you already have things that are working. Services that bring in consistent revenue. Offers that make clients rebook fast. Systems that run without you babysitting them.
Instead of adding more, make what you already have better. Refine it. Polish it. Teach it. That's the boring business move, and it is so much more powerful than it sounds.
Boring Creates Safety. Safety Creates Money.
Here's something I think about a lot. Our clients come to us to exhale. To feel safe. To be held for an hour. They are literally trusting us with their nervous system.
And if your nervous system is in chaos... you cannot create that space for someone else. That energy is contagious, whether you're seeing clients yourself or leading a team.
Boring creates safety. Safety creates trust. Trust creates retention. And retention? That creates profit. Real, sustainable, take-it-home profit.
So What Does Boring Actually Look Like?
A few practical things I started doing that changed everything for me...
Stop saying yes to everything. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Your capability is never in question here. But your capacity absolutely is. If something isn't a clear, obvious yes... it's a no. At least for right now.
Set a hard stop time. I set an alarm on my phone. When it goes off, I stop working. No "just one more thing." No "let me finish this real quick." I stop. And what I found is that having a deadline actually made me more efficient, not less. I stopped wasting time because I knew exactly how much of it I had.
Keep a "not right now" list. Anytime something comes up that sounds amazing and you can't let it go... write it down. Get it out of your head and onto paper. Then leave it there. You're not saying no forever. You're saying not right now. And I cannot tell you how many times I've gone back to that list and thought... what even is this? That feeling tells you everything you need to know.
Bougie Still Matters
I want to be really clear about something. Boring does not mean bland. Bougie still matters. High standards, elevated experiences, thoughtful details... all of that still lives here. Bougie and boring together is sustainable luxury. The elegance without the exhaustion. The growth without the chaos.
That's what we're after.
So if your business feels heavy or scattered or noisy right now, take this as your sign. Double down on what's already working. Stop chasing what's new. Clean up what you have and make it shine.
I promise you it is more than enough.
