Ep. 34 - New Year, New Spa Energy
It's that time of year when everyone is talking about their resolutions. They're going to eat better, work out, be more consistent on social media, get organized, yada yada yada.
And honestly? Most resolutions we don't keep going.
I personally don't really set them. I have goals and aspirations, but I set them all year round. I don't just wait till the beginning of the new year to do it.
Although there IS something really special and magical about the very beginning of the year that helps reset everything. It's a really good feeling.
Especially as business owners, we don't need another thing on our to-do list. We need more clarity. What's going to move the needle? What's going to help our spa grow in a way that feels aligned with our big picture vision?
That's what today's episode is all about.
Step 1: Reflect Back—What Worked, What Didn't
Before you decide what to focus on in the new year, you have to look at the past year.
I'm not talking about a six-hour CEO retreat. I mean a quick, honest reflection.
You can do this privately. Nobody needs to see what you write down. But if you're being honest with yourself:
What really worked this last year?
Were there any really great profitable months, and why?
Which team members stepped up?
Where do I need to either step up a little bit more or take some steps back?
What absolutely drained me? (Whether time-wise, energy-wise, or financially)
For example: Maybe you realize that lash lifts consistently brought in really good revenue with low overhead, but that really complicated promotion you ran in spring made you barely break even.
Or maybe you notice your membership program is solid, but you need better communication. (This is something I'm working on in 2026—I started it and feel really good about it, but I want it to be even more crystal clear and even bigger and better.)
This exercise helps you separate the things worth repeating from the things you need to let go of.
Step 2: Celebrate Your Wins (Big and Small)
This part is SO important and most spa owners skip it.
You have to pause and celebrate what you DID accomplish.
Maybe you:
Brought on a new team member
Raised your prices and nobody freaked out
Kept the business afloat during a tough month when cancellations were absurdly high
Didn't quit when it got really overwhelming
Even small wins count:
You got eight hours of sleep last night
You're going on a weekly date with your spouse and it's brought you closer together
Take a minute to actually recognize those wins. Because the truth is, if you only ever focus on what's next (like us high achievers usually do), you're going to stay in this constant state of busy and never feel like you're getting anywhere.
Celebrate the wins because it will build momentum. And it's not just for you—share those wins with your team too. They need to feel that energy as you head into this new year.
Step 3: Choose ONE Goal for Q1
This is something you should have done in the 2026 planning I recommend you do in September. I typically do this at the beginning of September every year, and it helps me know where I'm going and that I'm setting up my business to give me a really incredible life AND give an incredible life to my employees.
I break the year up into quarters and make sure my Q1 goal is aligned with the entire goal for the year.
Don't give yourself 20 goals to accomplish. Don't even give yourself five.
Just choose ONE big Q1 goal and ask yourself: What's the one thing, if it got done, would make everything easier and more profitable?
Make sure it all ties back into the bigger 2026 vision.
Maybe it's:
Building out your membership program
Training your team to take on more so you can step out of the treatment room more
Tightening up your numbers so you actually know your profit margin and you're keeping it where it's meant to be
Choosing one focus doesn't mean you're ignoring everything else. It just means you're setting your intention, energy, and time around the one thing that matters most this quarter.
When Q1 ends, you'll pick the next thing for Q2. But make sure you've recorded yourself, recorded all your SOPs, recorded whatever you're going to need so you can hand it off to someone else or make it repeatable next year.
This is how you create real structure and momentum inside your business instead of getting lost and scattered in all these resolutions and goal settings.
Set the Right Intention for Q1
Put it on a sticky note. I'm all about sticky notes.
Put it somewhere you look every day—your mirror, your computer, the wall next to your bed, the cabinet that holds all your plates. Just somewhere you're always going to look and you're like, "Oh, that's right. Focus. I need to focus on this thing."
Literally write it in big letters. Put it on your front desk, your treatment room mirror—wherever you'll see it every day. Let that be the filter for all your decisions.
If it doesn't support your one big focus, then it's just a distraction. And you don't need any more distractions.
Remember This
A new year, new spa energy isn't about hustling harder. It's about:
Reflecting on what worked
Celebrating your progress
Choosing one aligned focus that sets the tone for the entire year of success
